As a young man, I dreamt of following my Father's footsteps as a professional musician. I envisioned grandeur. I believed I would one day change the world with my art. I would leave my indelible mark upon the earth. I would journey across it, spreading my message through music. I would do the things I love and enjoy so much while experiencing life. I would bring that joy to people. I aimed to make a real difference with this unique set of skills. Somehow, I wanted to make the world a better place in my own way.
My execution wasn't always spot on. My ideas might have been a little out of what people used to call "the box." Still, the intent was always there. My aim was true. As I got older, I realized that the grand scale I had shot for wasn't necessary. I hope I became a little wiser. Though adventurous and exciting, it wasn't necessary. I could make a difference here, where it all started for me. I haven't completely given up on my hopes of one day gracing stages in places far from home. However, it's here in Spokane I can provide the most good. This is true regardless of what is needed. From our Veterans and elderly, I will help people who are less fortunate. Even those in dire need, if there's something I can do, you can bet I'm going to do it. And I'm not alone.
The Pacific Northwest breeds a different kind of human. It sounds silly to say, but I believe it wholeheartedly. Maybe it's the seasons, could be the abundance of Evergreen trees. Whether it's something in the air, or the water, if you've been here you know it's special. It's up to us to preserve and help spread that to everyone we encounter. It really is the smallest gestures that make the biggest impact. It's not about what you do for people that they remember. It's not about what you give them. Sure, you might share a smile. You might go out of your way to hold a door open. Maybe give the man there on the corner a few bucks. What people remember is how you made them feel. And that feeling, that warmth, it's contagious and so easy to pass on to someone else who might need it. Simple acknowledgment these days can really make a difference not only in someone's day, but their life. But I'm thinking bigger. Grander. We want to be a driving force that leaves everyone we meet better than they were when we met them. A source of strength, the catalyst to enable change. The reason they feel inspired to inspire. Even if it's just that little compliment paired with a smile, an encouraging word. Someone to talk to, lean on. A warm meal, or wool socks on a cold day. It is the example that helps motivate someone to change their life. In return, they may take the time to be that support for someone else in need or crisis.
I was lucky to have three of the most incredible people in my life. I believe they are among the most remarkable individuals to have walked this earth. They served as examples of what a good man is. They're gone now, and maybe I didn't always follow their lead. Yet, I am beyond blessed and a better person because of it. I'm proud of who I am. I stand for my values. I take pride in my community and its people. And I know there are a lot of people out there just like me. People who still have faith in humanity. People who take the time to help when it's needed. Lead by example and do not only what is right, but what is fair and just. Fathers and Mothers who want their children to grow up compassionate and kind. Parents want their kids to have a level head on their shoulders. They wish for them to know right from wrong and good from bad. And though it's not always easy or fun, they want them to do the right thing. Not only for themselves, their family and friends, but for the community at large.
It's our time to step up. Do what's necessary to move us all forward and enjoy this gift we've been given, together. My Father always gave me some advice. He said if you see something that needs to be done, and it can be completed in a reasonable amount of time, you should stop and do it right then and there. If you notice something that needs to be done, and it can be completed in a reasonable amount of time, pause and address it. Handle it without delay. Take action immediately. Don't procrastinate or put it off on someone else. Little things make the biggest difference, and all it takes is that first step. As I mentioned earlier, we are not a religious group by any means. Spiritual? Yes. Our members have varying beliefs and different faiths. What we all have in common is that we are all connected, in one way or another. Love binds us in the strongest way possible. It's love for self, for community, and for the betterment of all. We're always looking for ways to serve our community, and each other. Please feel free to reach out anytime if you're in need. You might also see a way to solve one of the many crises our city or citizens suffer from. If you'd like to volunteer, or even just need someone to talk to. We are here for you. Perhaps you haven't seen us out around town yet. We might be picking up garbage, volunteering at the Veterans hospital, or singing at the assisted living facility down the road. Keep an eye out, maybe we're trying to plant fruit-bearing trees in the public parks, or handing out sandwiches downtown. Heck, we might be the ones planning the big block party you heard about. Or maybe we're helping to get art supplies to kids whose families can't afford them. No act of kindness is too big or too small. I promise, they always come back around. These are the moments that show me what life is all about.
